The Pharisees Seek To Test Jesus

From today’s reading...

But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question, ‘Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?’” Matthew 22:34-36

Here we have yet another story of the powers-that-be seeking not to understand this new upstart, this local yokel, this hillbilly from the boonies, but rather to trick Him, to trip Him up so they could put Him down.

And they were religious leaders—men entrusted with guiding and mentoring their followers to find God.

We know that Jesus stumped them in today’s reading.

We also know the Pharisees and Sadducees overlooked their differences to join forces in a vain attempt to silence Jesus once and for all.

What two powerful parties exist today that might join forces to put you and me down for not bending the knee, donning the mask, and accepting their poison?

Knowing that the times have not changed, that Matthew wrote today’s Gospel passage to encourage you and me today to fight the good fight, is the only way to...
