From today’s reading...
Thus I have gazed on you in the sanctuary, seeing your power and your glory.
Better your faithful love than life itself; my lips will praise you.
Thus I will bless you all my life, in your name lift up my hands.
All my longings fulfilled as with fat and rich foods, a song of joy on my lips and praise in my mouth.
On my bed when I think of you, I muse on you in the watches of the night,
my heart clings to you, your right hand supports me.
May those who are hounding me to death go down to the depths of the earth,...” Psalm 63:2-6, 8-9
The Bible is so dense with meaning and guidance that I rarely choose more than a line or two from the daily readings to focus on, but today, these seven verses from Psalm 63 just cry out to be read and pondered together.
It’s obviously a love letter/poem. Although it was probably written by a man—King David—it reads as though a bride is writing it about her bridegroom, her lover, who is away, in the darkness, exploring new territories, confronting evil, defending their homeland, yet still supporting her from afar.
Since Jesus is the bridegroom and we, His Church, His bride, you can see how viewing this passage as a love letter makes sense. The mighty and powerful King David is not afraid nor ashamed to express his love for his Lord. And it’s a deep, complex love. It can be considered agape and storge, as well as phileo and eros.
“Eww, Wes! How can you talk about loving Jesus erotically? You sicko!”
Ahh, that’s the devil talking through you. You’ve allowed the devil to pervert society’s treatment of sex and skew its true unitive, procreative, bonding meaning.
But let’s save that discussion for another day.
Today, ask yourself if you have a love affair with God, as David did. Could you write a love letter to Jesus similar to what David wrote? If not, get busy learning how because it’s the only way to...
