Hot Droppings...In Your Eye!

Posted by Wes Schaeffer | June 1, 2021

From today’s reading...

That night I took a bath; then I went into the courtyard and lay down by the courtyard wall. Since it was hot I left my face uncovered. I did not know that there were sparrows in the wall above my head; their hot droppings fell into my eyes. This caused white spots to form, which I went to have treated by the doctors. But the more ointments they tried me with, the more the spots blinded me, and in the end, I become completely blind. I remained without sight four years; all my brothers were distressed on my behalf; and Ahikar provided for my upkeep for two years, until he left for Elymais." Tobit 2:9-10

In nearly four years of writing these daily Biblical musings, I’ve never written about Tobit.

As I read today’s passage from the Old Testament, I almost skipped over it because who the heck wants to read or write about a guy getting blinded by bird poop?

I mean, come on, Man!

Heck, the Jews and most Protestants don’t even read Tobit or consider it a non-canonical book. (Which means they allow themselves to pick and choose when and where to use some of the lessons in the book when it’s convenient and furthers the point they want to make, but I digress.)

Tobit was a “righteous dude,” as Grace would say. (Name the movie.)

He kinda reminds me of Job.

He did everything right, yet he encountered struggles and difficulties in his life, which caused him to lash out at others, even his loving wife, whom he berated and accused of being a thief when she was rewarded for a job well done. Well, she returned the favor by accusing him of being a hypocrite since it was believed at the time that physical ailments were punishments from God for sinful acts.

We’ll spend many more days on Tobit this week, so get ready for some interesting tales, insight, and inspired wisdom.

But for now, keep doing the right things, which means not berating your loved ones nor being a hypocrite, which will go a long way in helping you to...

Stay the course.
Keep the faith.
Endure.

Now go sell something.
