The Rumor Spread

The rumour then went out among the brothers that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus had not said to Peter, ‘He will not die,’ but, ‘If I want him to stay behind till I come.’” John 21:23

There’s an old joke about rumors and gossip: “I can’t tell you anymore. I already told you more than I know.”

None of us are immune from it, not even the apostles, so actively fight the urge to hear and spread rumors and gossip with the triple-filter test, which is to ask, “Is it true; is it kind, or is it necessary?”

Some attribute this to Socrates, but I don’t think that’s accurate.

Regardless of its origin, it’s a good filter to run your information through before you go running your mouth, which is usually not the way to…
