They Did Not Believe The Women

Posted by Wes Schaeffer | April 16, 2022

From today’s reading...

And they returned from the tomb and told all this to the Eleven and to all the others. The women were Mary of Magdala, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. And the other women with them also told the apostles, but this story of theirs seemed pure nonsense, and they did not believe them. Peter, however, went off to the tomb, running. He bent down and looked in and saw the linen cloths but nothing else; he then went back home, amazed at what had happened.” Luke 24:9-12

We see a common theme in today’s Gospel reading: the women aren’t given the respect they deserve, and Peter is the first among equals.

While, collectively, the men did not listen to the day’s women as much as they should have—and still should!—God has, throughout the Bible, ensured to highlight the wisdom, value, equality, and even courage of women from Genesis to Revelation.

Eve was side by side with Adam, the Mother of God was “robed with the sun” (Revelation 12:1), and the women who were closest to Jesus played a prominent role in seeing and proclaiming His Resurrection as we see today in Luke, as well as in Matthew 28, Mark 16, and John 20.

And just as in Luke 24, Peter received a prominent mention in Mark and John’s retelling of the Resurrection.

You’d think that being married, Peter would know the women were shooting straight with him.

But Jesus trusted the women with being the first to witness His Good News, and He tasked Peter with leading the team to carry it out to the world.

Be holy and humble like the women while running headlong to the Lord like Peter, which is the only way to...

Stay the course.
Keep the faith.
Endure.

Now go sell something.
