Partiality Pushes Us Apart

Posted by Wes Schaeffer | February 20, 2020

From today’s reading...

But if you show partiality, you commit sin,
and are convicted by the law as transgressors.” James 2:9”

Paul is telling James to not judge a book by its cover—or a person by the clothes and jewels they wear, the car they drive, or the home in which they live.

But we all do it.

We make judgments in the blink of an eye.

It's literally how our lizard brains are wired to keep us from being eaten by saber-toothed tigers, but there are no saber-toothed tigers.

So detach and recognize the snap judgments you make about your neighbor, your fellow parishioner, your co-workers, etc. and ask yourself if you treat everyone the same. If you give everyone the same benefit of the doubt. If you're as open to performing favors, lending an ear or a helping hand to the hourly worker as the VP.

Because only by seeing both the humanity and divinity in each and every person and treating them as the child of God that they are will you be able to...

Stay the course.
Keep the faith.
Endure.

Now go sell something.
