From today’s reading...
‘But he said to me, “You are going to conceive and will give birth to a son. From now on, drink no wine or fermented liquor, and eat nothing unclean. For the boy is to be God’s nazirite from his mother’s womb to his dying day.”’” Judges 13:7
Today, we are reminded of the connection between Samson and John the Baptist—today’s Gospel is Luke 1:5-25, which is the story of Gabriel speaking to Zechariah and informing him of the pending birth of John—which also connects King David to Jesus.
Samson was a Nazirite from womb to tomb, and so was John.
Both prepared the way for their kings.
Both fell through sensuous women, although Samson’s sinful actions with Delilah was his undoing, while John the Baptist fell by the actions of Herodias and her daughter.
As we always see, the Old Testament foretells the New Testament, and the NT fulfills the OT.
