Solomon's Parents Were Adulterers

Posted by Wes Schaeffer | December 17, 2022

From today’s reading...

and Jesse fathered King David. David fathered Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,” Matthew 1:6

Matthew opens with the lineage of Jesus, which counted 14 generations three times from Abraham to Jesus, yet within that listing are little exposes, little clauses of elaboration, and they’re not all glowing.

With all of the ancestry tools available today, people are quick to tell the world they are descendants of someone famous, but I’ve never seen anyone post, “Hey, my great great great great great great great great great great great great great great grandfather was a philandering, conspiring murderer and his wife, my great great great great great great great great great great great great great great grandmother couldn’t keep her legs together when her husband was off fighting for her freedom.

Yet that is what God wanted us to see today in Matthew’s account of the lineage of His only son, Jesus.

God does this to show us that He can bring good from bad, but there is always a price to pay when we allow sin to enter our lives.

Similarly, God knows the ultimate good that came about through David, so He is proud of David  and Uriah, despite their sinful failings, which, by the way, describes you and me as well.

So don’t be ashamed of your family.

Embrace the good with the bad as God does, which is the only way to...

Stay the course.
Keep the faith.
Endure.

Market like you mean it. Now go sell something.
