Tell John What You Have Seen

Written by Wes Schaeffer | December 16, 2021

From today’s reading...

Then he gave the messengers their answer, ‘Go back and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind see again, the lame walk, those suffering from virulent skin-diseases are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, the good news is proclaimed to the poor; and blessed is anyone who does not find me a cause of falling.’” Luke 7:22-23

Today we read about John sending his disciples to get the 411 on Jesus.

Why is that?

Maybe it’s because John was in prison and didn’t have WiFi to follow Jesus on TikTok.

Perhaps it was to confirm that He was the real Jesus, not an imposter.

Maybe John knew his death was near (and Jesus’s?), so he wanted his disciples to see the Messiah with their own eyes to have their faith solidified for the trying times that were soon to come.

Regardless, Jesus delivers the goods both in His deeds and in His words, for He references both Isaiah 35 and 61 in His answer because He was both a good Jew as well as the Son of Man, so He knew His Tanakh or Hebrew Scriptures, a.k.a., the Hebrew Bible or Old Testament.

John was also a good Jew and inspired by God, so he likely saw the wisdom in Jesus’s reply, and his disciples probably did as well.

So look for the signs God gives you every day and walk in the footsteps Jesus has provided us.

By proclaiming the Good News in how you live, you’ll never be the cause of anyone falling, which is the only way to...

Stay the course.
Keep the faith.
Endure.
