The Two Become One Flesh

From today’s reading...

This is why a man leaves his father and mother and becomes attached to his wife, and the two become one flesh.” Ephesians 5:31

In Genesis 1:26 we read “God said, 'Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves,’…”

When I first read the plural of that verse it confused me. But we know from 1 John 4:8 that “God is love.” For love to exist there must be someone else on which to bestow that love, which starts to explain the plurality reference by God in Genesis.

So in order for the Creator and Origin of love to make us in “our own image” He had to make us male and female, which means our complementarity is godly. Our ability to love as God loves is literally stamped into our bodies and in becoming one flesh we both come closer to God and participate in His salvific plan.

That’s why sex and holy matrimony are powerful forces that are not to be trifled with. The sooner we get back to respecting God’s plan for strong, healthy families the more readily we’ll all be able to...
